Gioia Tauro in Calabria, Cagliari in Sardegna, Augusta in Sicilia e Brindisi in Puglia. Le autorità portuali di queste città sono state segretamente contattate per saggiare la disponibilità ad ospitare sulle banchine l'operazione marittima più delicata del momento:
il trasbordo dei container contenenti i veleni dell'arsenale chimico siriano del dittatore Assad da due navi commerciali a un’unità della marina militare americana, la Cap Ray. La telefonata è arrivata ai dirigenti dei porti italiani da rappresentanti dell'Opac, l'organizzazione per il divieto delle armi chimiche che sta gestendo tutta l'operazione in base all’accordo firmato a settembre tra Usa e Russia.
LA SCELTA DEL PORTO italiano verrà comunicata ufficialmente domani dal ministro degli Esteri, Emma Bonino, ai parlamentari italiani nel corso di un'audizione alla quale saranno presenti anche i rappresentanti Opac. I 4 scali, anche se molto diversi tra loro (per esempio Gioia Tauro è enorme, Augusta assai più piccolo) sono tutti in condizione di poter ospitare le manovre di trasbordo sulla nave americana che poi salperà alla volta dell'Atlantico dove dovrebbero essere materialmente effettuate le operazioni di distruzione dell'arsenale.
Le armi sono state stoccate dentro container, ma non ci sarà bisogno di utilizzare banchine particolarmente attrezzate per la movimentazione perché le navi-madre, le danesi Taiko ed Ark Futura, molto simili tra loro, con un pescaggio rispettivamente di 9 e 7,5 metri, sono imbarcazioni da trasporto relativamente piccole.
La Ark Futura, in particolare, è una cosiddetta Ro-Ro con 2.200 metri di carico utile, in grado di essere riempita e svuotata con dei semplici camion. Per tutta l'estate ha continuato a imbarcare auto e turisti a Vado Ligure per Cagliari e viceversa. Fino al 14 dicembre era in uso alla compagnia genovese Grendi dell'armatore Bruno Musso e in quella data la compagnia danese che ne era
proprietaria l'ha ritirata e a quel che risulta l'ha a sua volta noleggiata alla marina militare danese. Da alcuni giorni la Ark Futura e la Taiko non appaiono più sugli schermi del sistema Gps su cui vengono indicati i movimenti di tutte le navi. L'ultima rilevazione le segnala nel porto siriano di Latakia. La segretezza che circonda l'operazione è dettata sia da ovvie esigenze di prevenzione contro eventuali attacchi terroristici, sia dal fatto che i porti finora individuati per il trasbordo hanno negato la loro disponibilità. È successo in Francia, Danimarca e Albania.
